SMA Olé Publishing-LeoNora Cohen’s Books

This is a Blog about Leonora Cohen’s vision; her vision to bring bilingual children’s books into the primary schools of Mexico and specifically into rural (campo) schools in the State of Guanajuato.
It is a blog about the Dream, the Vision, the Mechanics and the Implementation of each phase of its creation to final fruition.

Our Concept
LeoNora Cohen is the author of at least 26 children’s books; all simply written in both English and Spanish. All of LeoNora’s books are directed at certain age groups, teaching them life lessons about the many choices young children are given throughout their formative years. Youngsters ages 4-7 are shown the choices of many various…

Our latest Update
I’ve been very lax in writing as well as very busy over the past month and a half. Nora and I have traveled to Patzcuaro in Michoacan. I believe I told you about that trip in my last post. There have been so many festivals in San Miguel since I last posted to our blog:…

Our Mondays and Wednesday teaching English continue
Nora and I continue to go to the schools on Mondays and Wednesdays. Monday is always devoted to reading one of her books to the kids in either 1-2 grade or 3-4 grade. Nora has been spending most of her time reading the Magic Boots series to the little ones. Between Nora and Carmen, the…

Donor Recognition
We can’t express to you enough how much we appreciate your help in bringing Nora’s books to the campo schools. We have experienced first hand just how much interest these small little books generate with the kids. Each Monday, we travel to one of the schools to help the teachers translate the “English part” of…

A typical Wednesday at Salitrillo
Each Wednesday, we come as a team to help the kids with English. I had planned an activity making name necklaces to practice “My name is…”, using yarn and post-it notes. I did not realize that the sticky side was the short side, nor did I realize how difficult the task would be for second…

Our Trip to Patzcuaro
Last week, Nora and I broke away from our schedule to visit the Magic Pueblo of Pátzcuaro. We stayed three nights at a beautiful hotel (Hotel Parroquia) on one of the local squares named after a local hero.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrudis_Bocanegra. We visited many interesting sights and saw some of the most beautiful country-side imaginable. The State of…

September 10th-A Fun Day
September 10th was a fun day. Nora was asked to give a presentation to the children and the UU Congregation. Being “Grandparents Day”, her book Grumpy Grandpa Dinosaur was perfect for the occasion. Nora recited the book in English (in quite an animated fashion I might add) as Jerome Diáz Espinoza read to the kids…

Book Distribution Progress
We have now distributed 263 books to three schools. Two of the schools, Nueva Pantoja and Salitrillo are now actively using the books as learning tools. Nora and I have had the opportunity for the past 2 Mondays to assist the teachers at Salitrillo by reading the English portions to the kids. The first week…

Our First 2 Weeks
We have been back in San Miguel for a couple of weeks now and have made some real progress. Donn’s apartment is taking shape. We are “forced” to live here until mid October because Nora’s house (down the street a few blocks) is rented out. We are making an imitation silk purse out of a…

San Miguel de Allende “Here we come.”
Donn’s son and daughter-in-law (Geovana) left for Australia on Sunday evening, leaving us to get ready for an early departure the next day. Goodbyes and hugs taken care of, off we went at about 7:00am. Donn had bought Mexican insurance the day before, so we had all the paper-work we would need to get into…
