Our Mondays and Wednesday teaching English continue

Nora and I continue to go to the schools on Mondays and Wednesdays. Monday is always devoted to reading one of her books to the kids in either 1-2 grade or 3-4 grade. Nora has been spending most of her time reading the Magic Boots series to the little ones. Between Nora and Carmen, the teacher in 1-2 grades, they have begun introducing the kids to professions they may want to be when they “grow up.” There are at least 43 different professions mentioned and pictured in the Magic Boots series. The children love the pictures and the many choices. We have even made a ‘bingo’ game with 16 professions. We plan on doing more. (Milton/Bradley eat your heart out)

What I have been doing in 3-4 grade is reading the books in Spanish one week and then slowly reading in English. There are life lessons in each book: Friendship, poverty, disability, strife, dreams and adaptation. We are beginning to realize that the kids love to read and learn about the real world and its struggles. The second language aspect of the books is indeed an added advantage. But as an English language learning tool, that should go slowly. A few weeks ago, we finished the Old Lady Who Wanted a Garden. 2 weeks ago we read the Oso-Gata book. And last week we began The Skinny Donkey book. Nora writes all her books with such poignancy that the children become enthralled. In the weeks to come, we plan on visiting many more schools to introduce Nora’s books to the teachers and students. We are also upgrading our website (www.SMA-ole.org) ; making it easier to purchase our books in the U.S. and in Mexico. Christmas is coming, so maybe you should look into some nice gifts for the kids and grandkids.

We have decided to give a free book with every $50.00 or more donation. Make sure when you donate, you write us a note telling us which book you want shipped and the recipient.

Last Wednesday while Nora was instructing the 1st graders with a bingo game, he plastic stool collapsed and sent her sprawling on the cement floor. All the kids came to her rescue. They were very concerned. She’s been sore for the last few days but is bouncing back.

We have a lot of catching up to do with our posts. There has been tons of events in beautiful San Miguel; and we’re hoping you are interested. Tomorrow, I’ll write about the incredible week-end of St. Michael. Fireworks, horses, parades…24 hours a day. “we got pictures…” Later everyone.

Wow Nora – hope all is well. Biggest danger to our age is falling.
Looking forward (big time) to being there and being with the kids too.
